Ultisols — strongly weathered, leached soils with a clay-enriched subsoil

With 5.68 million acres mapped, Smithdale is the 3rd-largest of 24,791 U.S. soil series. No series covers more of Mississippi: it accounts for 11.1% of the state’s mapped soil. Among the 1,278 mapped Ultisols it is the 2nd-largest. Outside its main state it also ranks high: the 2nd-largest of 439 series in Alabama and the 3rd-largest of 449 series in Tennessee.
